Between 1964-65 and 1972-73, the Smoke Eaters never finished higher than fourth in the WIHL. The 1970's saw the Smokies rebuild with a mixture of local and imported talent. In 1979 the Smoke Eaters won the Savage Cup and advanced to the Patton Cup finals in Manitoba, losing to Steinbach, Manitoba.
In 1982-83 the Smokies won their last Savage Cup but again lost in the Patton Cup finals, to St. Boniface, Manitoba.
The Smoke Eaters folded after the 1986-87 season, ending seven decades of senior hockey in Trail. The WIHL folded a year later.
In 1976, the 1938-39 and 1960-61 Trail Smoke Eaters were inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame. In 1994, the same two teams were inducted into the BC Hockey Hall of Fame.
